We started doing the final assignment on Thursday and I had no clue that we had to finish everything by next Wednesday. We started off with recording of Gary, Andreas and Mallory's (who had been kind enough to help us) voices. After that, we plan to continue on Monday as we will be having our final presentation for PcomD later on.
Monday was here and we were somehow convinced that we can finish it by either today or tomorrow. That was good as Mr John told us that we were the fastest group. Andreas went to borrow the equipment. But, he decided to stay put in the audio room to add in all the sound effects (SFX) while the three girls (Naf, Vivien and me) went to record the sound. What we need was the sound of the bus arriving, when we are in the bus and when we alight. So, we took the bus from school to Tampines Mall. However, on the way, the recording was not smooth and we can hear cuts and cracking sound from the headphone. We had no idea how to remove the excess noises. We hear it from Pro Tool after we got back to the studio and sadly, the quality of the sound was bad from all the unwanted noises. Luckily for us, Andreas knew what was wrong. Andreas mendled with the machine and sort of solved the problem for us. Now, the sound doesn't sound too bad. So, Naf and Vivien went to take a bus to record the sound again. As the quality of the sound had lowered the whole quality of the project, Naf suggested that we ask Mr John about the problem.
On Tuesday, we finally got all the sound effects in. All we need to do is wait for Mr John to help us with the unsolved problems. So, Mr John gave us some advice. He said that as the noise is coming from the left side only, we can create two mono tracks and drag the stero track down. Then after that, delete the left mono. It works! Therefore we don't need to retake the sound again. Hpwever, Mr John said that we can keep the stero track and still fix it by playing around with the analog. Lowering the volume sometimes help too. But as for our hitting part, it doesn't sound too convincing, therefore we have to take it again. This time, we got Gary to help us. At first, when we tried it out, it sounded like slapping instead of hitting. So, we retake it again with hitting of the bag as it sound the closest. We even pitch shift it to make it sound more real. After a few hours, we manage to add in background music.
We completed everything before 12pm, and that's so cool!

DAT recording
For this assignment, we have to record 5 different sounds. We have to record the toilet flushes, vehicles moving past us, fountain, canteen and footstep. The first thing we do when we got hold of the machine, we charged it as Mr John had warned us that the battary runs out pretty quick. Not forgetting the X-Y tactic that Mr John had taught us.
First, we went to the toilet to take the flush. As the volume is too high, the sound through the headphone was very loud. Then I finally realised that the volume can be lowered down by turning the 'knob' in the machine. Basically, the 'knob' controls both the right and left output of the sound. The recording for the toilet flush was a success, except that for the first take, there was some cut in the middle. So we took it again.
Next, we stop by the canteen to take the noise. It was crowded with people and the sound heard through the mic and headphone seems perfect, except that there wasn't much of plates and utensil clanking. After that, we headed down to level one to record footstep. We had Vivien walking together with Naf, while I hold the mic to follow them and Andreas record. Then, we went to the fountain. However, when I was hearing it through the headphone, there was noise in the background. But I'm not sure if it was supposed to sounf like that. We had a short rest by the fountain as it was rather cooling. After resting, we went all the way to the school entrance to capture the sound of vehicles zooming past us. But, when we reach there, we do not see a lot of vehicles and was quite dissapointed. Luckily, there are vehicles coming our way as we started recording. However, there are disruption as the recording was going on. There are cuts and buzzing sound inbetween.
We went back to the audio room and began to transfer the sound from the tape to Pro Tool. We have to rewind the tape back, then record the sound in Pro Tool. After that, we are ready to select our 30 second of our best sound. It took us some time to pick out the best 30 second. And we encounted a few problems, the footstep was still short by 5 second and when we cut out the sound of the vehicles, the sound don't flow well. We asked Mr John and he told us some tricks to slove this problems. Firstly, for the footstep, we can simply take out the sound and then extend it. For the vehicles, we can do cross fading to make the sound flow. And the technique, cross fading was really useful.

Audio_song
For song, we had agreed to sing 'God Knows', which is a Japanese song. Actually, not all the members liked Japanese song. It's because I told them that we can get it done quick, they are okay with that song. We also managed to get Andreas to sing the song too as he listen to Anime song. We started off with me recording first, then followed by Andreas. I was quite scared to sing in front of other people, and in the end, I sang badly for the last verse of the song. After me, it's Andreas turn to sing.
When we are done with the recording, the group members started adjusting the volumes. I tried out the desser(De-S-er) to lower down the strong 'S' sound produced by Andreas. But, I don't really get how to reduce it as it still sound the same. Therefore, me and Vivien cut the part where the 'S' comes in. We also managed to adjust the volumes in the tracks folder. All we need to do is just put key frames on the graph, then move the line to determine the volume. It's easier and faster that way. I used this function to lower down the part where I sounded weird and too loud.

Audio- Haunted House
It have been sometime before I post on this blog. Well, to start off, Nafisah planned out the sricpt. The way Naf planned out the script made it seems like it's a comedy. But everyone is fine with it. There seems to be a lot of sound that we have to put in to the recording (like footstep, rain, dripping of water)Luckily, we have got the sound library in the school computer. For the first recording, we went through the sound library to check for sound that is suitable to be used in our recording. The girls in the group went in to the recording room to record the voices. Nafisah and me are the voice actors for the script and vivien is the narrator. We recorded the script into parts as it's too long. Gary and Andreas were outsid, checking the volume and stuff, plus recording our voices too. After that, we put in the sounds to match it wih the speech and script. Because we had imported too many sound into the programme, the sound at the bottom could not be play unless we drag it up to the active tracks. It's a new discovery.
We manage to play around with the delay and revert to test out different echos that suit the place that the characters are in. Because they are in a house that is made of cement (not wood), therefore the echos should not be too weak or too strong. The haunted house took us like 4-5 days to do it as this 5 minutes long script had alot of sound in it. In the end, we did the voice of the zombies by recording a lot of different voices in the recording room, after that, we lowered down the pitch through pitch shift. Tuesday / Advert day
OMG!!! I was late for class today again! Just couldn't hear the handphone ring!!!!
When I entered the classroom, I only see my group members and two other classsmates only. Oh! I didn't realize that the other two groups don't need to come early. >.<
So, since Naf had already started planning the script since the 1st day of lesson, we are ready to get down to business today. Before I even reach, they are already discussing about the script and decided on the Sfx. Wow!! My trusty team mates! Gotta love them all!
Basically, Me, Andreas and Gary were the voice actors for the advert. The script sounds perverted and the way Andreas voiced it was.. making it worst. >.<''
Anyway, everything goes smoothly and we only takes a few try before confirming the VO. After that, Naf went to the music library to search for background music for the advert. We heard like thirty over songs before deciding on the one that is suitable.
Everything was complete in like, one to one and a half hour time!! Wow!
Efficiency!!!! Great job to everyone =))
Upon completion of the 1st assignment, we proceed to think about the next exciting assignment, ''Haunted House''!!
Yea! We brainstormed ideas while we eat. Cool! Hope tomorrow will be a good day.
